YALETOWN

Yaletown sits in the southernmost corner of Vancouver proper. It is bordered by the very heart of downtown Vancouver on one side and the waterfront of False Creek which is lined by Pacific Boulevard on the other. This neighbourhood has a character shaped by its rich history in the Vancouver area. Initially, a terminus spot for Canada’s Pacific railway, Yaletown was re-imagined when its waterfront locale became one of many sites used as a venue for the World Fair in 1986. In the years since Yaletown has developed its own flavour which includes industrial aesthetic, chic warehouse living spaces, a contemporary style, and subsequently it has blossomed into one of Vancouver’s most coveted neighbourhoods. Besides, as the rest of Vancouver has established itself, it’s become clear that Yaletown is close to peak destinations in the surrounding area, making it all the more desirable. Finally, Yaletown is excellent not only by its own merit, but also because being a part of Vancouver more broadly is a considerable benefit. Just adjacent is bustling downtown Vancouver, which is filled with some of the best dining, drinking, and nightlife that Canada has to offer.

Location

Undoubtedly the best thing about Yaletown’s location is its connection to the waterfront. To the very south of the area, you’ll find George Wainborn Park, David Lam Park, and Cooper’s Park. All three of these gorgeous green spaces are directly against False Creek and provide beautiful views across the water as well as great spots to lounge, picnic, and relax on sunny days. Speckled between the parks are a number of marinas which make for perfect harbour watching as ships sail in and out of the bay. Yaletown is also supremely close to Granville Island; in fact, it’s barely five minutes away across the Granville bridge. Here you’ll encounter the famous Granville Island Outdoor Market, another outstanding waterside park, and a selection of top-notch seafood restaurants.

Additionally, Yaletown is directly adjacent to Downtown Vancouver which hosts a laundry list of prime restaurants (Black+Blue,  Forage, and Boulevard Kitchen to name a few), watering holes, and the largest shopping selection anywhere in British Columbia. Juxtaposed to the organized chaos of downtown, the area is more laid back and relaxed than the bustling heart of Vancouver proper. Yaletown’s location offers the best of both worlds with speedy access to all that Downtown Vancouver has to offer as well as a pleasant reprieve from its constant energy. Finally, Yaletown is also superbly close to necessities as well. Vancouver General Hospital is directly adjacent across the water, less than a ten-minute drive away, as is the Vancouver City Hall. For those without cars or looking to differentiate their commute, the Vancouver public transit system makes it a breeze to get around, especially by way of the metro.

Out and About

While Yaletown is indeed close to some of the best locations elsewhere in Vancouver, the area itself has so much to offer. Good eating is ample and everywhere, with many spots boasting outdoor seating and offering waterfront views. Provence Marina side is one such location which also serves up delicious sea fare. Also be sure to check out The Flying Pig Yaletown which, much like its name, delivers authentic Canadian standards but with a unique twist. Finally, The Parlour is a perfect spot to grab a well-made cocktail and some small gourmet plates any evening. Beyond food and drink, Yaletown is packed with other activities. Sports fans will be happy as just to the east of the neighbourhood lay BC Place and Rogers Arena. Whether you want to watch hockey, football, or soccer up close and in person, Yaletown is walking distance from watching the pros do so. Just a few kilometres farther to the east is the Vancouver science museum which features dazzling new exhibits regularly. Should you wish to explore it, Yaletown has so much to reveal, and as you discover more about the area, it will become hard not to love.

Always Something Going On

The neighbourhood of Yaletown is managed by the Yaletown Business Improvement Association, an organization dedicated to improving and innovating Yaletown to ensure that it remains a beautiful place to live. These efforts are easily recognizable for any resident of Yaletown. There truly is always something going on here and the pleasant activity brings people out of their homes to enjoy the neighbourhood, fostering a community in the process. For example, for five days in June, there is an annually recurring event called “Let’s hear it for Yaletown” during which there are free dance and jazz performances throughout the area. There are also a variety of walking tours and curated activity lists to give you or your whole family an ideal selection of things to do in Yaletown throughout the day. These are but a few examples of how Yaletown is kept interesting, exciting, and welcoming, all because of one simple reason; the community cares. If there is one mark of the character of Yaletown’s community, it is that fact, and this makes it one which is a pure joy to be a part of.
